Gifted and Talented

The schools in the Thanet Cluster have agreed that we wish to create a culture of achievement and that all our children are entitled to make the greatest progress possible. We will endeavour to ensure that special abilities and talents are identified as early as possible and developed during the children’s time in school.

The schools will ensure that all staff are trained to successfully identity children with the highest potential, providing the range and depth of experience that will enable the child to achieve their potential Schools will identify their top 10% of each year group as “gifted and talented”; approximately 7% will be “gifted” in one or more of the statutory subjects and 3% will be “talented” in subjects like art, music and P.E/sport. There is no strict numbers policy and additional children with abilities can be added.

Pupils will be offered appropriate classroom activities to develop their gt_musicabilities giving them every opportunity to achieve their potential. In addition there will be extra-curricular activities designed to broaden and enhance the knowledge, understanding and experiences of the children. Some will be organised by the school, some by the Cluster and others through the LEA and other outside organisations. Schools in the Cluster will be working together to maximise the opportunities for young people in the area.

There will be an effective transition procedure between Key Stages to allow smooth transfer from one school to another at these critical times in the pupils’ school careers.

It is essential that schools and parents work together to ensure that the pupil has every opportunity to achieve their true potential. The development and progress of all pupils will be recorded and monitored so that appropriate activities and actions to be put in place to support them.

There will be monitoring of the work within each school, and of the Cluster as a whole, on a regular basis. This is checked annually by a neighbouring Cluster’s management and reported to the Department of Education and Skills (DfES) for their approval
