Highlights of some of the work being carried out at King Ethelbert School
  • Mentor appointed October 1st 2005

  • Transition activities. Year 6 programme in place. - learning mentor/senior TA/buddies - works with junior school mentors
  • Learning mentor liaises with aim higher mentor re. transition pupils year 9 into year 10
  • Learning mentor continues with L2L and communication sessions timetabled on E/B programme for years 7 and 8. Also works with year 9 nurture group (new Sept 2006)
  • Learning mentor involved with training of the peer mentors - activity session 1 per term, and 1 support session per month
  • Learning mentor developed ‘tutor time' pack based on EQ strategies
  • Learning mentor has worked with various groups of pupils during the past year ie.:
    - fantastic 7 (traits of Aspergers/communication problems) ( 2 x per week)
    - G&T pupils in KS3 - higher order thinking skills and target setting
    - LSU pupils - social skills
    - Year 9 upper band underachievers - study skills, aspirations, action plans
    - Supporting year 8 lower band during PSHE lessons
    - LAC (24)
    - Year 7 girls - (Sept 2006) - ‘perception group' - using SEAL pack on relationships and perceptions.
    - Year 7 (Sept 2006), 3 boys ‘positive behaviour changes' - using art as a medium to develop creativity/discuss relationships
    - Year 11 - 3 pupils - emotional support (minimum 1 every 2 weeks)
    - Various 1:1 meetings with KS3 pupils.
  • Learning mentor undertaking EQ training ‘ Train the trainer'.
  • Learning mentor did share an office with the aim higher mentor, but now has her own office
  • SLT restructuring - new line manager in place for learning mentor September 2006
  • Learning mentor delivered part of a workshop at EQ conference in Edinburgh November 2006 and delivered a session of EQ at KES

FEB 2007

  • Delivered a talk on perception at TEC Learning Mentor Meeting and celebration of successful mentor training.

MAY 2007

  • New groups to start in term 4
  • - challenge group (OHL) 14 x year 8 upper band boys

      challenges/teamwork/construction tasks/logical problem solving

  • - focus on G&T in year 8 - 2 groups - single sex groups, to produce documentaries
  • - year 9 documentary

MARCH/APRIL 2007

  • Yr 9 Revision sessions - delivered to each Yr 9 tutor group during PSHE lessons.
    Topics included - ‘How to revise' / Mind mapping / Association learning / Rhythm methods of remembering information / Preparation for revision / use of ‘post it' notes

APRIL 2007

  • Arranged leadership workshop for G&T pupils in Yr 7 and 9 with Felicity Aston who took part in the race to Antarctic.

MAY/JUNE 2007

  • Training of mentors ready to take part in liaison work with main feeder school and Yr 6
  • Lead learning mentor visits Yr6 with the mentors, ice breaker / team building and confidence building activities / Q&A
  • Lead learning mentor also works with identified vulnerable pupils in liaison with parents and school SENCOs

JUNE 2007

  • Lead Learning Mentor delivered a session at an EQ conference held at St Augustine's, attended by teacher from all over England and some teachers from other countries.

JUNE 2007

  • 2 x Yr 7 Booster groups - 1 session per week. Aim: to boost the pupils motivation and engagement in lessons / L2L / positive thinking / self esteem / raise aspirations
  • Visited main feeder (Birchington Primary) school to work with 2 groups of Yr 6 pupils.

JULY 2007

  • Lead Learning Mentor involved in Summer School - 45 Yr 6 pupils, 4 mornings and 1 full day.

SEPT 2007

  • 26 x Yr 8 indentified to be mentors - 26 chosen from 70 applications - divided into groups A and B, trained by Learning Mentor. Support meetings.
  • 2 x Yr 7 groups confidence
  • Working on fund raiser for TAG Pet rescue organised by Yr 7 pupils.
  • G&T x 2. Debating
    Year 8 debating skills
    Debating formally/public speaking
    head of English becoming involved in the debating session with an aim to develop a debating group.
  • 1 x upper-band confidence group: Learning 2 Learn
  • Coordinating and leading key workers.
  • Anger management x 4 1:1, KS3 and KS4
  • Drop in times for KS3 pupils, particularly popular with Yr 9 girls.
