At present we have one Learning Mentor at St. Saviour's, but owing to the very positive impact she has had upon the school we are looking to employ another. This would then enable us to have one in the upper school and one attached to the lower school.
What does our Learning Mentor do?
Her prime responsibility is to support individuals who have problems with attendance, behaviour, learning or simply social skills.
Her work involves:
- Identifying and removing barriers to learning.
- Setting targets, monitoring progress and providing guidance.
- Building confidence and self esteem.
- Facilitating reintegration into mainstream classes.
- Liaising with families, staff and outside agencies.
Activities our Learning Mentor is involved in are:
- Social skills groups.
- Anger management groups.
- Behaviour reward shop.
- Homework club.
- Healthy tuck shop.
- Extra curricular activities.
- Co-ordinates Buddies.
- Co-ordinates play leaders.
- Supports vulnerable pupils at break and lunch time.
Our learning mentor is fortunate enough to have a classroom which we have developed into a learning support centre. This gives her a base for her social skills groups, for meetings with Buddies etc. She shares the room with our AEN specialist TA who uses the room to support the learning of children on our special needs register.
