Birchington Primary School is a full primary school (age range 4-11) with just over 400 pupils. It has at present 38% SEN and has over 7% on the school child protection register. Last term over 70 were deemed as being at risk of non attendance or exclusion. Having lost our year 6 and still to get to know our new year R's this has currently dropped to 65.
This last year has been a particularly exciting year for the school. The whole school behaviour policy was re written in consultation with parents, governors, pupils, TA's and teaching staff. BIP aided the running of the behaviour policy by funding not only a seclusion room but also a Social, Emotional Aspects of Learning Room and a Sensory Room. This has greatly improved behaviour and has reduced the need to exclude children out of school.
Access to Launch Pad has also kept our most needy and vulnerable children safe (and occupied) on the rare occasion that we have had to exclude. The follow up work from this agency has also been of great help to our children with emotional and behavioural problems who need that contact and expertise to settle back down to school life.
Class behaviour has also been targeted, by supplying the teachers with motivational resources within class. We have begun to target behaviour in the playground by supplying KS1 with playground equipment. We are particularly excited about our next project as we hope to improve behaviour in our KS2 playground, particularly in the winter time, by supplying them with an all weather surface to play on all year round. This will create a huge amount of extra space for children to be able to play games of all sorts all year round safely. We are also engaging with PIP+ and our behaviour mentor to supervise and teach playground games to some of our most vulnerable children.
