Dame Janet Community Junior School is a large junior school that serves a socially depressed area of Thanet in Kent.  The school lies on the periphery of the town of Ramsgate, serving the local housing communities of Newington, Northwood and Whitehall, areas that appear highly in the Kent and National depravation indices.  55% of children at Dame Janet are on the Special Educational Needs Register.  The needs of these children are varied, but are mainly for Emotional / Behavioural and Speech and Language difficulties.  Several of the pupils have physical disabilities and the school has recently undergone some refurbishment in order to help support the needs of these particular children.

Inclusion in the Thanet Excellence Cluster overall has been far-reaching and positive in supporting the school's ability to put in a variety of programmes and strategies in order to versify provision for so many of the pupils, with or without special needs.  The training programmes for Learning Mentors has enabled the school to have 6 LM's in post working across the school - 5 with a focus on supporting underachieving pupils and 1, with direct support through the BIP,  whose main focus is to work with the more challenging or vulnerable pupils.

Our Behaviour (Learning) Mentor works predominately with challenging pupils - provides a ‘Time Out' facility, counselling service and ongoing Bubble (Talk) Time, allowing our pupils a facility in which to express their feelings and know that they have somebody they can talk to and who will support them through times of their own particular difficulties.

SEAL (Social Emotional Aspects of Learning) is embedded across the school, with resources made available through the EQ strand.  These resources can be accessed by staff through the schools' network or from the SEAL resources pack.

Our more talented children are recognised through a Gifted and Talented register and various opportunities are made available for pupils who display ability in certain areas.
